January Farm Prices Received Index Increased 3 Points From Last Month
The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in January, at 124 percent, based on 1990-92=100, increased 3 points (2.5 percent) from December. The Crop Index is up 4 points (3.1 percent) and the Livestock Index increased 3 points (2.7 percent). Producers received higher commodity prices for corn, oranges, broilers, and eggs. Lower prices were received for cattle, tomatoes, calves, and grapefruit. The overall index is also affected by the seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased average marketings of broilers, cotton, soybeans, and rice offset decreased marketings of oranges, tobacco, eggs, and cattle.
The preliminary All Farm Products Index is up 11 points (9.7 percent) from January 2006. The Food Commodities Index, at 123, increased 1 point (0.8 percent) from last month and 5 points (4.2 percent) from January 2006.
Prices Paid Index Increased 2 Points
The January Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is 152 percent of the 1990-92 average. The index is up 2 points (1.3 percent) from December and 4 points (2.7 percent) above January 2006. Higher prices in January for complete feeds, other services, feed supplements, and feed grains more than offset lower prices for diesel fuel, feeder cattle, cash rent, and LP gas.

Prices Received by Farmers
The January All Farm Products Index is 124 percent of its 1990-92 base, up 2.5 percent from the December index and 9.7 percent above the January 2006 index.
ALL CROPS: The January index is 132, up 3.1 percent from December and 22 percent above January 2006. From December, index increases for feed grains & hay, commercial vegetables, and oil-bearing crops more than offset the index decreases for fruits & nuts and food grains.
Food Grains: The January index, at 149, is 0.7 percent below the previous month but 27 percent above a year ago. The January all wheat price, at $4.50 per bushel, is down a cent from December but 98 cents above January 2006.
Feed Grains & Hay: The January index is 142, up 6.0 percent from last month and 54 percent above a year ago. The corn price, at $3.23 per bushel, is up 22 cents from last month and $1.23 above January 2006. The all hay price, at $112 per ton, is $4.00 above December and $18.90 above last January. Sorghum grain, at $6.43 per cwt, is 34 cents above December and $3.27 above January last year.
Oil-Bearing Crops: The January index, at 115, is up 4.5 percent from December and 9.5 percent higher than January 2006. The soybean price, at $6.42 per bushel, increased 24 cents from December and is 55 cents above January 2006.
Cotton: The January index, at 82, is up 1.2 percent from December and 2.5 percent above last year. The January price, at 49.5 cents per pound, is up 0.2 cent from the previous month and 0.9 cent above last January.
Potatoes & Dry Beans: The January index, at 120, is up 1.7 percent from last month and January 2006. The all potato price, at $6.98 per cwt, is up 8 cents from December but down 9 cents from last January. The all dry bean price, at $22.70 per cwt, is up $1.10 from the previous month and $3.50 above January 2006.
Fruits & Nuts: The January index, at 157, is down 2.5 percent from December but 18 percent higher than a year ago. A price decrease for strawberries more than offset a price increase for oranges.
Commercial Vegetables: The January index, at 159, is up 6.0 percent from last month and 20 percent above January 2006. Price increases during January for onions, celery, and broccoli more than offset price declines for lettuce and cauliflower.
LIVESTOCK & PRODUCTS: The January index, at 116, is 2.7 percent above last month but down 1.7 percent from January 2006. Compared with a year ago, prices are higher for broilers, eggs, and hogs but lower for cattle, calves, and milk. Turkeys are unchanged.
Meat Animals: The January index, at 110, is up 0.9 percent from last month but 9.8 percent lower than last year. The January hog price, at $41.40 per cwt, is down $2.10 from December but 70 cents higher than a year ago. The January beef cattle price of $85.00 per cwt is up $1.40 from last month but $10.10 lower than January 2006.
Dairy Products: The January index, at 110, is up 1.9 percent from a month ago but 0.9 percent lower than January last year. The January all milk price of $14.40 per cwt is up 30 cents from last month but down 10 cents from January 2006. The fluid grade milk price increased 30 cents and the manufacturing grade milk price is up 10 cents from the previous month.
Poultry & Eggs: The January index, at 134, is up 7.2 percent from December and 18 percent above a year ago. January market egg prices, at 78.8 cents per dozen, increased 12.3 cents from December and 35 cents from January 2006. The January broiler price, at 43.0 cents per pound, is up 3.0 cents from December and 5.0 cents above a year ago. The January turkey price, at 40.8 cents per pound, decreased 2.6 cents from the previous month but is unchanged from a year earlier.
