Noting that the patents cover the use of fiber-optics and photonic components to transmit biosensor information from within the body to a device or devices inside or outside the body, the patents also involve the use of fiber-optic components for MRI Safety and Image Compatibility. Fiber optic components are virtually impervious from interference from Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and also provide very high bandwidth data capacity useful for imaging and remote sensing. The teachings cover various photonic applications where light beams are converted to electricity for powering sensors and for providing therapeutics, or used to carry data back from the sensor or imaging device, and for adapting non-photonic devices to use fiber optics and low powered lasers.

Biophan previously announced the successful testing of a pacemaker using a fiber-optic lead to pace an animal's heart. These patents teach how many devices can use fiber-optics and photonics components to carry information and/or deliver power to a variety of devices, both implantable and those used in minimally invasive interventional medicine, and without potential tissue damage or imaging interference when used during an MRI procedure.
