Sunday's historic F1 Singapore Grand Prix will have a number of innovations that should ensure it is compelling viewing. The first night race in the history of F1 has attracted plenty of media attention, and the fact that Drivers' Championship leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren is just one point clear of Ferrari's Felipe Massa has added to the allure. The Singapore street course will be illuminated by state-of-the-art lighting. The temporary lighting system is a major feat of engineering. 108 423 metres of power cables (generating 3 180 000 Watts), 240 steel pylons and some 1 500 light projectors have been installed, creating light that is about four times brighter than that used at sports stadiums. Formula One tyre suppliers Bridgestone will use special reflective paint to mark their super-soft and extreme-wet compounds at Singapore Grand Prix, the first Formula One race to be staged after dark. Bridgestone have taken the unprecedented step to be sure that fans can still differentiate between tyre compounds as easily as they would in normal daylight. Making their debut at the Singapore Grand Prix are 35 Digiflags. They can display different flag colours and are ideal for night races due to their luminosity and they will be used in conjunction with the traditional flag signals. Apart from what should be some very exciting, close racing, the innovations will contribute to what should be a memorable viewing experience. |
