Go Arnie go Franz
By David Parker July 3, 2003 Start the campaign now. Put up the banners. Operators are standing by for your donation to the Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor fund as I type. It's the chic thing this summer. Take a successful franchise and grind it to a halt. First, The Hulk, then Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, and now Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. After a $4 million preview session on Tuesday, T3 earned $12.4 million on Wednesday. That's 34% higher than Terminator 2 did 12 years ago, but 33% less than Men In Black II did this Wednesday last year. So, we can safely say that Terminator 3's five-day totals should fall somewhere in between $52.3 million and $87.2 million. More likely it will be closer to Terminator 2 than MIIB.
The lone hit in the openers is Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. It really pains me to write that whole title out. The Reese Witherspoon sequel earned $9.1 million yesterday and should be well on its way to $45 million or more for the five-day weekend. This number has to put a smile on MGM's face, but the question is, can Reese break the sequelitis jinx of bad legs? Stay tuned.
Finding Nemo held tight at number five yesterday. Earning 2.2 million on Wednesday, the Pixar film has now made over $261 million, passing Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas for the 21st spot on the all-time domestic grossing list. Marlin and friends should make another $9.5 million this weekend to bring their total to $273 million. That will most likely knock The Matrix Reloaded from the top spot for the summer and the year. Well done, Nemo.
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is showing the typical summer sequel's legs, which means a quick fade after opening weekend. The Sony film dropped another 26% on Wednesday, bringing in $3 million. With $49.6 million in the bank, Full Throttle will need to find the cure for sequelitis fast if it hopes to get near the original's $125 million domestic tally.
The last opener in the subtitled trifecta is Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. Earning only $1.5 million yesterday, Sinbad must hope (but won't get) for incredible word-of-mouth. The animated film will most likely earn less than $10 million for the five-day weekend. This really is a disaster for DreamWorks and is the first of their animated films to be an outright bomb.
The top ten films earned $32.7 million yesterday, which was 88% higher than Tuesday and 137% higher than last Wednesday.
Check back next on Saturday when I analyze Friday's numbers and on Sunday for John Hamann's weekend wrapup.
