Purgatory (Latin: purgatorium, via Anglo-Norman and Old French)[1] is an intermediate state after physical death for expiatory purification.[2] Roman Catholic doctrine holds that this state exists and that those being purified can be helped by the prayers of the living.[3] Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have declared that the term does not indicate a place, but a condition of existence; and that those who, after death, exist in a state of purification are already in the love of Christ who removes from them the remnants of imperfection.[7][8]
