After Tuesday's Bell Market Commentary
On Tuesday, light sweet crude for July delivery settled 63 cents higher at $72.03 a barrel. A steep drop in consumer confidence sent the markets reeling. The Conference Board reported that its consumer confidence index for May dropped to 103.2 from a revised reading of 109.8 in April as consumers fretted about the labor market and the economy. Renewed worries about interest rates were a hindrance. The Dow plummeted 184.18, or 1.63 percent, to 11,094.43. The Nasdaq composite index plunged 45.63, or 2.06 percent, to 2,164.74. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 20.32, or 1.59 percent, to 1,259.84. The Russell 2000 index declined 18.51, or 2.54 percent, to 711.04.
