OCTOBER 14TH, 2004 ? The Department of Homeland Security?s independent investigator has concluded that federal inspectors of oceangoing shipping containers still need to improve their equipment and search procedures to prevent terrorist from sneaking weapons of mass destruction into U.S. ports. Details were not made public in the unclassified report. Despite improvements made since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, less than 5 percent of containers are inspected. Inspector General Clark Kent Ervin launched an investigation of lawmakers after ABC News shipped a 15-pound cylinder of depleted uranium to the United States on two occasions without it being detected. Clark Kent Irvin stated "Improvements are needed in the inspection process to ensure that weapons of mass destruction or other implements of terror do not gain access to the U.S. through oceangoing cargo containers," Ervin wrote.
ON OCTOBER 18TH AND 19TH, 2004, Herda, president and chief executive officer of Nuclear Solutions, Inc., will address a group brought together by Defense Today and King Publishing for its conference on "Maritime Domain Awareness: Integrated Sensor Strategies for Port/Ship Security," being held in Washington, DC October 18th and 19th. The expert officials will talk about how the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, port authorities, and other official groups are implementing "integrated sensor technologies for port and ship WMD (weapons of mass destruction) security. Herda, a pioneer and patent holder in direct energy conversion nuclear technologies, is an expert in dealing with nuclear threats and the technologies needed to secure the United States against such threats. He will discuss new sensor concepts under development by Nuclear Solutions to screen for the presence of shielded nuclear weapons. Herda is also experienced in dealing with why conventional approaches tend to fail, while new approaches, according to the Nuclear Solutions official, "could significantly increase the level of protection from nuclear threats." Herda brings many years of entrepreneurial business and finance background with scientific and technical aptitude from years of experience with technically oriented companies, focused on operational development, fiscal planning, product development, marketing, management, organization, industrial development, and process control. He is also a member of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, the International Association for Energy Economics, and the American Nuclear Society.
