Hacketts picks Sackets for new store OPENS IN MID-JUNE: Former restaurant to house company's 10th NNY location By DAVID WINTERS TIMES STAFF WRITER TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2008 OGDENSBURG ? Hacketts will open its 10th store in Sackets Harbor, located in the former Harbormaster restaurant on West Main Street.
Seaway Valley Capital Corp., New York City, the parent company of Hacketts department stores, announced Monday that the store will open in mid-June. Talks about locating in Sackets Harbor started after Seaway Valley merged with North Country Hospitality last month.
"Sackets has become a regional destination spot based on its charm and fine restaurants, and Hacketts hopes to offer a pleasant retail addition to complement all of what the village already has to offer," said Norman V. Garrelts, chief executive officer of Hacketts.
North Country operates three restaurants in the village ? Sackets Harbor Brew Pub, Sackets Cantina and Good Fellos Brick Oven Pizza and Wine Bar. The company also owns the building that housed the former Harbormaster and Sackets Smokehouse restaurants. The Hacketts store will occupy the first floor of the building, employing six to eight full- and part-time workers.
"It didn't make sense to do another restaurant," Mr. Garrelts said. "There's a limited amount of retail space in Sackets Harbor. We're looking at something that's more tailored to a resort community."
The store will feature a variety of footwear, clothing, gifts and select specialty food and beverages in the nearly 5,000-square-foot space. Mr. Garrelts said no decision has been made yet on whether the store will be a seasonal or year-round operation.
"I think it's exciting for downtown," said Cheryl M. Payne, president of the Sackets Harbor Chamber of Commerce. "I'm excited for the summer. We have quality shops and restaurants in the village."
Seaway Valley, owner of WiseBuys, finalized the merger of the stores in November. Hacketts has nine locations in Northern and Central New York.
Once the retrofits are completed, Hacketts will have stores in Canton, Ogdensburg, Watertown, Massena, Potsdam, Gouverneur, Pulaski, Hamilton and Tupper Lake.
Hacketts, formerly Patrick Hackett Hardware Co., is a 178-year-old retailer that has been a True Value hardware store but has added inventory over the past decade to convert its image into more of a department store.
