SAN DIEGO – February 1, 2010 –AMSOLAR Corporation announced today its membership in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) as a Business Leader, the only solar power company to join at that level.
The company firmly believes it has both the responsibility and opportunity to champion the cause of campus sustainability initiatives beyond simply installing and operating such systems for schools around the country.
“We are delighted to have AMSOLAR Corporation on board and participating in the campus sustainability community,” said Paul Rowland, executive director of AASHE. “Their involvement in AASHE demonstrates a commitment to working with higher education to create a just and sustainable future for all.”
AASHE enables colleges and universities to meet their sustainability goals by providing specialized resources, professional development, and a network for sharing information about sustainability products and services. Membership covers the entire business or campus, so everyone can take advantage of event discounts, access to member-only resources, and other benefits.
Among AASHE’s major programs is the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), which provides higher education with a standardized, comprehensive self-assessment instrument. STARS metrics cover every sector of campus, from planning and administration to operations, to education and research. With STARS as a roadmap or guide, institutions can select meaningful and appropriate pathways to sustainability while conserving valuable resources, mitigating global warming, and building healthier communities.
AMSOLAR Corporation is focused on delivering solar power systems to the education community. Most recently, the company along with the University of San Diego announced formal plans to develop the eighth-largest solar energy facility on a U.S. college campus . The school is paying nothing to have the 1.23 Megawatt system implemented on nine buildings, but instead has entered an agreement with AMSOLAR, which will own and operate it through a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement, and sell the power to USD at a reduced rate.
The company is also active in conducting educational and philanthropic initiatives through its AMSOLAR GIVING arm that will increase the awareness and adoption of solar power and other sustainable programs throughout the United States.
“Participating in this type of program is a core part of our mission,” said Joshua Weinstein, Managing Partner of AMSOLAR Corporation. “For us to be successful in the long run we must look beyond the electricity bill to a more holistic accounting of our environmental, economic and social impact in the community. AMSOLAR GIVING is a structured way to help us develop programs that strengthen the role of alternative energy in our own backyard as well as around the world. That’s why we’re honored to be a part of AASHE.”
