History of MAGIC Device
Case study: Advance Tech taps IT expert from abroad
ABOUT three years ago, Advance Tech Communications Sdn Bhd (ATC), a mobile wireless research company, managed to entice US-based Dr Shiv Verma, a world-renowned expert in cutting-edge mobile wireless technology to come over to Malaysia to work on an exciting project.
The project was to commercially produce the world's first convergent handheld device that could double up as a laptop as well as a mobile phone with multimedia features.
From left: C.P. Loi, Advance Tech chairman Desmond Yong, Dr Shiv Verma and director Jonathan Loi with the Mobile Advanced Global Integrated Communicator
On May 13, Magic Shiv 1, an acronym for Mobile Advanced Global Integrated Communicator, was launched for commercial production starting this month. (YouTube video link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpAy9_3LcJA)
ATC co-founder C.P. Loi would be the first to admit that without Dr Shiv's knowledge, MAGIC would never had materialised.
“With Dr Shiv's mentoring, we have not only produce a world-class product but also developed a team of highly trained Malaysian IT experts in cutting-edge wireless technology that would be in demand globally,” he said.
China Media Group Corp chairman Con Unerkov said the company had placed an initial purchase order for 5,000 units and planned to buy 300,000 units over time.
“We aim to become the exclusive distributor for MAGIC and its upgraded versions in China,” he said, adding that Dr Shiv's involvement in the commercialisation of MAGIC was a critical factor in the company committing to the deal.
Unerkov said: “We see MAGIC as a key mobile device for our strategic mission to be China's leading new age media companies through the use of new technology and devices, combined with traditional media of TV, newspapers, magazines, billboards and the Internet, to reach today's mobile society.”
China Media Group is a “next generation” advertising/media company focusing on the lucrative Chinese market. It has offices in China, Hong Kong and the US.
On Dr Shiv's reasons for coming to Malaysia and taking on the challenge, he said: “I met Loi in Hong Kong about 15 years ago at an IT conference and, over the years, we established a strong friendship.
“He was keen on commercialising MAGIC and urged me to consider helming a team of IT graduates, including his son, to work on the project.”
Loi, however, insisted that the relationship was more of a “courtship” that went on for years. “We are just so lucky that he finally agreed to come over to help us,” he said.
Loi said Advance Tech faced many challenges in developing the product. “We self-funded the project over the years and struggled with limited funds. It was also difficult to get loans.
“Still we persevered and the commercialisation of MAGIC this month is a great achievement for all of us in realising a dream from concept to final product,” he said.
Loi said that thankfully, Advance Tech was now able to collaborate with the Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC) to further enhance MAGIC's features in future up-graded versions.
SHRDC is a non-profit organisation that was funded by the Selangor government to help assist in the development of a pool of talent for the IT, manufacturing and other industries.
SHRDC managing director Tan Beng Teong said the organisation was now providing various sophisticated software to support Advance Tech expansion plans, especially on future models.
“Without SHRDC's support, we would have to buy these expensive software,” Loi said.

M.A.G.I.C Windows Smartphone Has Everything!
M.A.G.I.C Windows Smartphone Has Everything! Currently hovering betwixt prototype and retail status, Advance Tech Communications new Windows Mobile smartphone market looks hot! hot! hot!
The MAGIC (Mobile Advanced Global Integrated Communicator) comes stuffed to the gills with connectivity and multimedia options, and is powered by a beefy Intel Xscale 624 MHz CPU with graphic accelerator 2700G3 and Video RaM – fast enough to leave all current Windows Mobile phones coughing in the dust.
The 10.5 ounce (300 g) Windows Mobile 5.0 device comes with more connections than a street spiv, offering GSM quad band, GPRS, Wi-Fi 802.11b, EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, IrDA FIR 4 and, of course, USB.
There’s also a built-in Global Positioning System( GPS) and, apparently, a Biometric Sensor.
M.A.G.I.C Windows Smartphone Has Everything! On board storage is taken care of courtesy of a generous 8GB hard disk, backed up by 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM, with a micro-SD expansion card slot.
There’s two 2.8? QVGA (320×240 pixels) displays onboard and – you’ve guessed it – there’s also two cameras, both offering a healthy 2 megapixel resolution.
Wrapping up the extensive feature set is a very useful VGA Out port and a small QWERTY keyboard for the tippity-tap action.
With all this functionality crammed in to the phone, it seems that Advance Tech felt that describing the ultra-premium device as a ’smartphone’ would be like calling a Leica camera a point’n’shooter.

Two short emails from CEO, yes we'll see a bunch of news and it should be soon. His email address is in my post below. Feel free to try and see if someone else can find out more info. I used his email from ATC not CHMD and he answered. Was very happy he said soon for news and updates. Looking to add more shares when possible. Not leaking anything good, playing it close to their vest. Feels like a big winner to me.

China Media Group Corporation Announces Sole Distribution Rights for China and Hong Kong for M.A.G.I.C.
China Media Group Corporation (OTC BB: CHMD) ("CMG") announces today that it has acquired the rights to be the sole distributor for the M.A.G.I.C. Convergent Communication device for China and Hong Kong.
Mobile Advanced Global Integrated Communicator (M.A.G.I.C.) is one of the world's first true convergent devices for the ubiquitous platforms of today. M.A.G.I.C. is designed and developed by Advance Tech Communications Sdn. Bhd. Mr. Desmond Yong, Director of Advance Tech, stated, "M.A.G.I.C. is a laptop computer miniaturized to the size of a handheld device, and incorporates a mobile phone, digital camera and global positioning device, and is probably the most powerful true convergent multimedia device of its kind in the world today." M.A.G.I.C. is a quad band mobile phone with GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS features that keeps you connected while mobile. More significantly, M.A.G.I.C. can deliver rich multimedia experiences like a powerful desktop PC because of its powerful hardware, comprising Intel's fastest mobile processor, inbuilt graphics accelerator and high fidelity audio codec. Mr. Yong further stated that, "We are thrilled to have China Media Group be our sole distributor for Hong Kong and China, the largest mobile phone market in the world. We are ecstatic to have the opportunity to include M.A.G.I.C. as one of the key mobile devices for CMG's Mobile IP TV strategies."
Mr. Con Unerkov, Chairman of China Media Group, stated, "Mobile entertainment is an exciting growth area for both the media and advertising industries. People today spend more time on the go and this has quickened the pace of technology adoption. Similar to the trend in the United States where Mobile TV and internet TV has sparked the interests of consumer and investors, China is expected to leapfrog to these technologies quicker, bypassing legacy infrastructure constraints faced by other operators. M.A.G.I.C. is a video communicator that makes mobile video a reality and is a key enabler for our Mobile & IP TV strategies moving forward."
Mr. Unerkov added, "With the convergence of telecommunications, media and television fast becoming a reality, we felt we had to be well positioned to take advantage of the upcoming opportunities that have presented themselves. We believe that the M.A.G.I.C. Convergent Communication device provides CMG a strategic advantage in one of the largest telecommunications/media markets in the world."

Telecommunications and Mobile Computing Unit
Advertising through mobile devices is becoming more prominent to reach the mobile society of today. The goal of the Telecommunications and Mobile Computing Unit is to provide the Company with entry into the new sector of advertising through telecommunication media and devices. Our strategy on gaining access through telecommunication media is through cooperation with existing networks or to establish select networks. However our longer term strategy is to establish a partnership with network operators to provide extensive network access for our advertising media. We have secured the distribution rights for M.A.G.I.C. Convergent Device for the territory of China and Hong Kong. M.A.G.I.C. is the next generation convergent device that has the full capabilities of a notebook computer but shrink down to the size of a PDA phone. During the year, the Company received the prototype unit "M.A.G.I.C. Shiv 1" or "S1" and conducted the compliance, functional, stability, load and usability tests. However after analyzing the market, we decided to proceed with the next platform M.A.G.I.C. W3 which feature a more superior specs and functionality. We believe that the W3 will be positioned as the high end convergent device for professional users running special applications.
We expect the M.A.G.I.C. W3 will be an unique convergent device to enter the information and advertising sector of the mobile phone market. We expect to receive the final prototype for M.A.G.I.C. W3 by Q3 2010.
In 2009, we have also entered into a joint venture with Advance Tech Communications Sdn. Bhd. ("ATC") to market and distribute the devices developed by ATC worldwide other than the countries already under distribution by the Company.
Another deal, In late 2009, the Group was appointed as an exclusive advertising agent for interactive digital media kiosk in Hong Kong.
There are plans to have these kiosks deployed in tourist attractions, hotels and shopping malls in 2010.
These kiosks offer 2 dimensions and 3 dimensions travel map of Hong Kong targeting tourists.
The kiosks also provide location based directory listing with interactive searches. Video ads are also made available on these kiosks.
We expect to have revenue from this business in 2010.

State owned China Mobile is world's biggest mobile phone operator
? China Mobile has 70% share of the domestic market
With more than 70% of the domestic market it has 518 million subscribers; more than any other mobile carrier on the planet.
It is the world's largest phone operator by market value and the largest Chinese company listed overseas. Its work on 4G technology and its interest in foreign acquisitions suggest its international profile may soon grow.
Already the company's influence is rippling out across the world, almost unnoticed. The rapid spread of mobiles facilitated by the company's high-speed network roll-out, is both a product of China's aggressive development and a contributor to it ? accelerating the pace of life and business, shrinking distances.
