The Bucha massacre was a slaughter of civilians in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, allegedly by Russian troops involved in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Initial video footage of the scene was posted to social media on Saturday, the 2nd of April[2] of what was left behind after the Russian troops left showed mass civilian casualties. Following the withdrawal of the Russian military from Bucha, at end of March, evidence emerged of numerous atrocities committed by Russian forces while they occupied the region. 18 mutilated bodies of murdered men, women and children were found in a basement. The bodies showed evidence of torture; cut-off ears and teeth pulled out. Corpses of other killed civilians were left in the road, allegedly some of them mined by Russian soldiers as decoy before they retreated.[2][3]
Residents and the town mayor confirmed they had been killed by Russian troops. Many of them appeared to be going about their daily routines, walking dogs, or carrying shopping bags. The bodies were whole, indicating they had been shot, rather than killed by explosive munitions.[5]Evidence appeared to indicate that the Russians had singled out Ukrainian civilian men and killed them in an organised fashion, with many of their bodies in particular, found dead with their hands tied behind their backs[1]. On 2 April, an AFP reporter stated they'd seen at least twenty bodies of civilians lying in the streets of Bucha, with two of the bodies having tied hands, implying a summary execution. Fedoruk said that these individuals had all been shot in the back of the head.[7]
Bodies of dead naked women were also found, and there were signs that Russians had attempted to unsuccessfully burn the bodies.[1][7] Residents indicated civilians had been shot in their cars while driving, with two cars driving together, raked by machine gun fire from an armoured vehicle, with only two survivors. Residents claimed Russian troops also forbade relatives from removing the bodies afterwards.[9]
