Thompson Creek posts Q4 profit as prices, output rise

By: Liezel Hill
5th November 2010

TORONTO (miningweekly.com) - Molybdenum producer Thompson Creek Metals earned $31,1-million in the third quarter of 2010, up from a $1,4-million net loss a year earlier, helped by a 28% increase in production volumes and rising molybdenum prices, the company reported on Thursday.

Revenue for the third quarter increased 41,4%, to $161,8-million, and the firm's average realised molybdenum price was 20% higher year-on-year, at $15,30/lb.

Stripping out some non-recurring items, adjusted net income was $51,6-million, compared with $14,3-million in the third quarter of 2009.

Thompson Creek said it produced eight-million pounds in the quarter, up from the 6,2-million pounds produced in the year-ago period.

"Thompson Creek's third-quarter financial performance was significantly improved from a year earlier mainly as a result of strengthening molybdenum prices," CEO Kevin Loughrey said in a statement.

"We anticipate that over the balance of 2010 and in 2011, the price for molybdenum oxide will continue to be volatile, but will gradually increase with the expected improvement in worldwide molybdenum-bearing steel production," he added.

Last month, Thompson Creek bought Canada's Terrane Metals, which owned the Mt Milligan copper/gold project in British Columbia.

The mine is expected to start production in 2013, and received environmental approval this week from the Canadian government.

Molybdenum, which Thompson Creek produces from mines in Canada and the US, is used to strengthen steel.

Gruß und schönes WE

Thompson Creek expects smooth sailing in financing Mt Milligan mine

By: Liezel Hill
5th November 2010

TORONTO (miningweekly.com) - Molybdenum producer Thompson Creek Metals could probably quite easily finance the development of its Mount Milligan copper/gold project, in British Columbia, from existing funds, cash flow and the exercise of warrants, assuming markets stay at their current levels, CEO Kevin Loughrey said on Friday.

Still, the company does not want to take any chances, and so it will also take on some equipment financing, and is negotiating for a revolving credit facility - likely somewhere in the range of $200-million to $300-million - he said in an interview.

Thompson Creek bought Mount Milligan in September when it acquired Terrane Metals, and is targeting first production from the mine in 2013.

The company has "conservatively" estimated capital requirements for developing the mine at about $1-billion, of which some $60-million or $70-million has already been spent, Loughrey said.

The company has around $350-million in cash, expects some $220-million assuming its warrants are exercisable at the end of 2011, and is still owed $85-million under a gold-streaming agreement with Royal Gold.

"And then we are generating a fair amount of operating cash," Loughrey said.

"So if the market prices stay where they are or go up, we really wouldn't need to do any financing to complete Mount Milligan."

Thompson Creek mines molybdenum - used to strengthen steel - from its 75%-owned Endako mine in British Columbia and the Thompson Creek mine, in Idaho, and also operates a metallurgical facility in Pennsylvania.

The company is expanding the mill at Endako, and also has a development project in British Columbia, Davidson, where it has been trying to decide on a development approach for the last couple of years.

However, the Terrane acquisition also brought the Berg copper/gold project, which Loughrey indicated he is quite interested in, although he indicated that it's unlikely the company could afford to develop both Berg and Davidson at the same time.

"We know quite a bit more about the Davidson project than we do Berg. So what we need to do is improve our knowledge base on Berg and try get up to that same level where we are at Davidson," he said.

"So I think somewhere near the end of 2011 we ought to be able to more fairly compare those two properties and decide which of these it makes more sense for us to develop."

MOLY OUTLOOK

Molybdenum prices, which averaged $17,58/lb in the first half of this year, dropped as low as $14,10 in July, but have since recovered to around $16/lb, as demand strengthens.

"And we continue to see strength there, I don't think that it will fall back at this point," Loughrey told Mining Weekly Online.

He reiterated that the medium to long term outlook for molybdenum is strong, particularly as demand from developing countries continues to grow.

Demand growth has been "steady but not dramatic", and will likely continue that way in the short term, until the next market catalyst that sparks a step-up in buying, he commented.

On the supply side, reports that China intends to limit molybdenum mining in the country is a positive sign for other producers, Loughrey noted on a conference call with analysts.

MORE PROJECTS?

Thompson Creek continues to look for additional acquisitions, but is more interested in earlier-stage prospects after completing the Terrane deal.

"I think the thing we are looking at next probably won't be of that magnitude, nor will it require that sort of capital investment on that time frame," Loughrey said.

"We're looking at something that's a little further out, a little more developmental."

The firm may also look further afield, potentially in Australia or South America.

"Construction to start after feds approve British Columbia mine project "

Thompson Creek has acquired Terrane Metals Corp. and is starting construction on its first gold and copper mine near Prince George, B.C., after the project was granted federal government approval to proceed.

The Mount Milligan mine project is located in northwestern B.C., about 155 kilometres north of Prince George.

Former Environment Minister Jim Prentice announced recently that the federal government has granted approval to the proposed project, which is one of the first major mines to be developed in B.C. in a decade.

The project underwent environmental assessments, which concluded the it is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, if the appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.

The $915-million mine is expected to employ about 1000 people at peak construction and the 30-month construction phase will provide an average of 370 jobs.

Construction involves an open pit mine, processing plant and associated infrastructure, a tailings pond, explosives factory, a 29 km access road and a 92 km transmission line.

strategisch wichitger Rohstoffe umsetzten.

Ucore Retains Collison for Mine Design

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, Nov 16, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX News Network) --

Ucore Rare Metals Inc. (TSX VENTURE: UCU) ("Ucore" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has retained Ken Collison of Collison Minecon Inc. ("Minecon") for the purpose of initial mine scoping, engineering and design work on a prospective Heavy Rare Earth mine and processing facility at the Company's Bokan - Dotson Ridge project in South East Alaska.

Mr. Collison is President of Collison Minecon Inc., and holds a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters of Engineering in Mining from the University of Saskatchewan. He was the Chief Operating Officer of Blue Pearl Mining/Thompson Creek Metals from 2005 to 2009, and was part of the team that purchased Thompson Creek Metals and built it into one of North America's premier molybdenum producers. He has previously held the positions of Vice President at Crandon Mining Corporation and Coeur Alaska, the Alaskan subsidiary of Coeur d'Alene Mines. He has extensive experience in mining operations, permitting and preparation of mining feasibility studies.

"Ucore is honoured to be associated with such an accomplished mine engineer as Ken Collison," said Jim McKenzie, President and CEO of Ucore. "He has a track record of successfully bringing prospective mines from initial scoping into profitable production, both efficiently and on a minimal allocation of time, financial and human resources. We believe that the fact that Mr. Collison has elected to be associated with the project speaks volumes as to the prospectiveness of near term mining operations at Bokan."

"The Bokan rare earth deposit is characterized by narrow vein hosted mineralization which can be readily extracted using classic narrow vein mining techniques," said Ken Collison, President of Minecon. "The vein stock works at Bokan are like the branches of an immense tree, with mineable widths and substantial HREE mineralization across the entire system. The mineralization in the Dotson Zone is highly consistent and continuous along strike. Further, the mineralization is visually demarcated from the surrounding country rock, with the opportunity to systematically remove the ore while leaving much of the waste rock in place. The methodology is well proven, and will have a small footprint relative to larger or open pit operations. The potential effect is a highly efficient prospective mining and milling operation, with minimal environmental impact, and a much faster track to design and permitting."

The Bokan rare earth deposit has an anomalously high content of dysprosium relative to other metals in the lanthanide suite and by comparison to other rare earth deposits. At the 6th International Rare Earth Conference in Hong Kong last week, industry expert Dudley Kingsnorth of IMCOA commented on dysprosium as being one of few rare earth metals to exhibit a pronounced supply shortfall in the near and intermediate term, with very few alternative sources of supply globally. Dysprosium is one of the most valuable, scarce and sought after metals outside of the precious metals group, and is in substantial demand for hybrid electric vehicles, nuclear power, lasers, and data storage applications. Bokan drill results have similarly exhibited anomalously high content of other highly valuable heavy rare earths including terbium, which is utilized in fuel cells and solid state devices.

Background

Ucore Rare Metals Inc. is a well-funded junior exploration company focused on establishing REE, uranium and other rare metal resources through exploration and property acquisition. With multiple projects across North America, Ucore's primary focus is the 100% owned Bokan - Dotson Ridge REE property in Alaska.

The Bokan - Dotson Ridge project is located 60 km southwest of Ketchikan, Alaska and 140 km northwest of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The project area is served by barge and float plane from Ketchikan, with a pre-existing road network providing access to the main target areas. REE mineralization at the Bokan-Dotson Ridge project is structurally controlled in multiple dikes radial to a Mesozoic peralkaline intrusive complex.

In 1989, a U.S. Bureau of Mines study (Barker & Warner, USBM OFR 33-89) estimated that the greater Bokan area contains 37.8 million tons grading 0.50% TREO. This historical non NI 43-101 compliant estimate equates to 374 million lbs of contained TREO and ranks as one of the most prospective and accessible heavy rare earth prospects in North America.
