KUANTAN, April 24 (Bernama) -- For the first time, all 42 members of the Pahang State Legislative Assembly visited the Lynas Corporation Ltd (Lynas) rare earth plant in Gebeng, near here yesterday.
The group led by Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob spent about three hours looking around the plant which began operation in November 2012.
The state assemblymen including 12 from the opposition came in two buses, one of them driven by Adnan, the state assemblyman for Pelangai.
On arrival, they were briefed about the overall operation of the plant by Lynas Radiology Safety Adviser, Prof Dr Ismail Bahari and several experts.
Adnan said the purpose of the visit was to enable the state assemblymen to learn about the operation of the rare earth processing plant.
"Our visit is to gain knowledge and information about the operation of the Lynas plant. It is very beneficial for the state assemblymen to learn about rare earth and what is going on here.
"The state assemblymen posed many questions to the experts. We learn about the plant's operation from the answers give," he told reporters after the visit.
Adnan was satisfied with the overall operation of the Lynas rare earth plant where the product quality and safety were given priority.
"Whatever controversy about Lynas raised in the press or social media contradicts what we see today.
"The plant is totally harmless to humans and does not affect health as previously portrayed."
He said the rare earth plant was seen as a project that benefit the country in the future such as petroleum which contributed to the economy.
