US trucker YRC posts smaller 2nd-qtr loss Tue Aug 3, 2010 9:02am EDT * Second-qtr loss of $9.5 mln vs $309 mln year ago * Cites sequential growth in business volumes OVERLAND PARK Kan., Aug 3 (Reuters) - U.S. trucker YRC Worldwide (YRCW.O) reported a smaller second-quarter loss on Tuesday and the once nearly bankrupt carrier said it was seeing "significant operating momentum" driving improvements through the rest of the year. YRC said it lost $9.5 million, or a loss of 1 cent a share, for the second quarter, compared to a net loss of $309 million, or a loss of $5.20 per share, in the second quarter of 2009. Analysts on average were expecting a loss of 8 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. The company said it was seeing sequential growth in business volumes, positioning it for further growth in the third quarter Last December, YRC, which is the largest U.S. trucking company handling smaller, or less-than-truckload shipments, was on the verge of bankruptcy when it negotiated a $470 million debt-for-equity swap with most of its bondholders that allowed the company to restructure its finances.
