BERLIN, Apr 26, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Germany's new hybrid-powered submarine has set a world record of two-week dive, the German Navy said Wednesday.
The high-tech hybrid-powered submarine of U32, U212A-class, traveled under water to Rota in Spain from Eckernforerde in Germany during April 11-25, according to a report by the German news agency DPA from Gluecksburg.
The vessel has a hybrid propulsion system made up of an electric motor which is fed power from fuel cells that burn hydrogen. The capability of the propulsion system had been proved during the trip.
The U32 is to protect the Straits of Gilbraltar and Mediterranean as part of the war against terrorism, the report said.
"The stealthy hybrid-powered vessels are almost noiseless and do not release any exhaust gases when under water,"the DPA added.
