Newly formed Areva and Gamesa offshore wind joint venture Adwen is targeting the Chinese market along with home waters in Europe.
The company said at a launch event at EWEA Offshore 2015 this afternoon that the Far East giant represents a "very promising market".
Head of sales Remi Coulon said a tariff of ?100 per megawatt-hour might seem low but China has a long list of projects that have been pre-approved and is ideally suited to the company's AD 5-132 machine (von Gamesa!).
Both countries also have a long track record in China. "It is a very promising market that will develop alongside our European story," said Coulon.
Adwen is targeting a 20% share of the European market by 2020. Plans include the potential for investment in the UK, depending on the business case, as well as already announced proposals in France and ongoing upgrades in Bremerhaven. Investment in the latter will allow for production of nacelles for 5MW machines as well as Adwen's upcoming 8MW model. The new machine will have a 180-metre rotor and mass production is planned for 2018.
