HOME-GROWN water treatment company Hyflux is flush with cash after a more than doubling of its third-quarter net profit.
Mainboard-listed Hyflux yesterday reported that net profit for the July to September quarter surged by 111 per cent year-on-year to $13.6 million.
Revenue in the three months shot up by 143 per cent to $50.5 million, boosted by higher municipal sales in Singapore and China.
This segment contributed 74 per cent of total revenue in the third quarter, compared to just 2 per cent a year ago.
Yesterday's results capped nine months of stellar earnings and revenue growth, at 136 per cent and 84 per cent respectively for the year to date.
Hyflux group chief executive and president Olivia Lum said: 'I am delighted that Hyflux has achieved another quarter of robust results.' She noted that the results are in line with another year of growth.
However, the same quarter also saw the company's raw and consumable material costs almost quadruple to more than $30 million, from a year earlier.
As it hired more research and development staff as well as engineering and technical teams to power its expansion, personnel costs also went up by 55 per cent.
The good news is, Hyflux's cash hoard strengthened to $106.4 million, with $36.1 million added to its coffers in the third quarter alone.
Quarterly earnings per share rose from 1.38 cents a year earlier to 2.67 cents, while group net asset value per share declined to 34.7 cents from 35.7 cents at the end of last year.
Ms Lum noted that the firm had delivered its first desalination plant, in Tuas, three months ahead of schedule, and that construction had started on its China facility in Tianjin, the firm's largest overseas desalination project.
'We are encouraged that these projects have received favourable attention from other potential customers,' she said, adding that Hyflux intends to pursue new markets such as India, while expanding its existing markets of China and the Middle East.
